Observing with the ROG 28-in telescope

NMM Planetarium

Using other telescopes

Greenwich students

As you have your lessons in the Royal Observatory Greenwich (ROG) access to the Peter Harrison planetarium is easy.  Many of the lessons will use the planetarium as a teaching aid.  Accessing the  Royal Observatory (ROG) 28-inch (but not observing with it) is also straightforward.  Observing sessions have to be specially arranged — and it is hoped to arrange at least two observing sessions during the year.  Watch the Home page (and listen in class) for details.  As classes take place during daylight hours there is limited opportunity to use telescopes during lesson time.  However, the Moon is sometimes visible in the day and if the chance arises a telescope will be set-up outside to view it.  Also there will be opportunities to view the Sun through a specialised telescope (called a Coronado) as well as standard telescopes fitted with special filters, under strict supervision.

SLW students

It is hoped to arrange at least two special visits to the Peter Harrison planetarium during the year, and at least one (hopefully more) observing sessions with the ROG 28-inch telescope.  As classes take place in the day, there is limited opportunity to use telescopes during lesson time.  However, the Moon is sometimes visible during the day, and if the chance arises a telescope will be set-up outside to view it.  Also there will be opportunities to view the Sun through a specialised telescope (called a Coronado) as well as standard telescopes fitted with special filters, under strict supervision.

Bromley students

Through a special arrangement with the Royal Observatory Greenwich (ROG) I will be arranging at least one planetarium session for the class.  In addition there will be a number of  opportunities to observe through the ROG 28-inch.  Watch this space.

As classes take place in the evening, there will be ample opportunity to view the night sky and use various instruments supplied by your tutor. Students who wish to bring along portable instruments are encouraged to do so.
