Who is the Observatory for?
· Astronomy societies
· Students at KS3, GCSE, A Level or Undergraduate level
· Teachers of astronomy, physics or science

· Individuals who can organise themselves into a small group
The Night Sky from GEO – what can and can’t be seen
Compared to the UK, the low latitude of the site provides an extra 15 o of southern skies. This means:
· Clear views of the Galactic Centre · The whole of the constellation of Scorpio well above the horizon · High altitude of planets and good alignment to the horizon when they are close to the Sun. · The magnificent globular cluster Omega Centauri, which rises to a maximum of 6.5 o above the horizon. · Shorter twilight, especially in the summer, hence longer observing time.
However the site’s location, latitude and local terrain mean that we cannot see:
· The Magellanic Clouds · Alpha Centauri · Eta Carina · North east horizon, due to mountain backdrop · Golf driving range lights (or major towns)! |
