The Night Sky from GEO – what can and can’t be seen

Compared to the UK, the low latitude of the site provides an extra 15 o of southern skies. This means:

· Clear views of the Galactic Centre

· The whole of the constellation of Scorpio well above the horizon

· High altitude of planets and good alignment to the horizon when they are close to the Sun.

· The magnificent globular cluster Omega Centauri, which rises to a maximum of 6.5 o above the horizon.

· Shorter twilight, especially in the summer, hence longer observing time.

However the site’s location, latitude and local terrain mean that we cannot see:

· The Magellanic Clouds

· Alpha Centauri

· Eta Carina

· North east horizon, due to mountain backdrop

· Golf driving range lights (or major towns)!
